About Department
Name of the Department: BOTANY
The Department of Botany is established in 1982 with few students and few faculty members. The dynamic and visionary contributions of several renowned botanists earned the Department national and international recognition for teaching and research, based on exemplary performance. Department highlights in terms of its ranking, courses. The Department of Botany is committed to expand and absorb the wide diversity of scientific disciplines that have come to be associated with the study of plants. Our B.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes are multi-faceted and designed to empower graduate students and researchers with a holistic and comprehensive education across a wide range of subject areas, which would enable them to contribute effectively to basic and applied education and research in plant Sciences. The Department has taken conscious efforts to expand teaching program bringing together novel developments in the field with traditional areas of Botany through field excursions and projects. The students are coached and encouraged through remedial teaching and academic guidance. Our mission is to strive for an excellent environment for learning and research in plant sciences and produce graduates and equipped with skills necessary to fulfill their role in contemporary society. Our vision is to maintain our position as the premier department of higher learning and research in Botany as advance centre of plant sciences and to further commit ourselves to academic excellence.
THRUST AREAS FOR RESEARACH
Plant Biodiversity Conservation, Ecology, Plant Physiology, Medicinal Plants and Coastal bioresources Management.
The department conducts M.Sc. coaching program as well as Remedial Coaching courses. Along with M.Phil. and Ph.D. program. The dept. has awarded 04 Ph.D. degrees to the students. Majority of the past students of the department have opted for teaching profession while some past students have occupied important positions in administration and research fields. A few past students have also earned reputation as successful industrialists and bankers. The Botanical Garden of the department has been recently undertaken the cultivation of rare, medicinal and aromatic plnats. Near about 150 such plants are grown in the college campus.
Vision: The continued wellbeing of the common man through a study of plant sciences.
Mission: Its mission is to apply conventional as well as non-conventional tools to understand plant process, development of human resource with hands on experience in the frontier areas of Plant Sciences. Establishment of linkages with National and International Institute for betterment of students of the Department. Core Values of the Department
Build up Area -2000sq. feet
Objectives:
1) Botany programme is designed to equip students with essential knowledge and technical skills to study plants in a holistic manner.
2) Students would be trained in all areas of plant biology using a unique combination of core and elective papers with significant interdisciplinary components
3) Students would be exposed to cutting-edge technologies that are currently used in the study of plant life forms, their evolution and interactions with other organisms and with the ecosystem.
4) Students would also become aware about the social and environmental significance of plants and their relevance to the national economy
5) To provide practical experience to the students as a part of the course to develop scientific ability to work in the field of research and other fields of their own interest and to make them fit for society.
